Tip 2 You do not need to know anything about any of the topics. • Actually for the speaking part, it is probably better to have fewer ideas. More ideas means more preparation time (You only have 15 sec. to prepare).
Reading Tips • Skim! Do not read and try to understand every detail. • It is often important to know the main idea of the whole text and sometimes you need to know the organization of the different parts of the text.
Reading Tips • Watch the time! • Do not spend a lot of time on questions you have absolutely no idea about. • Most questions are worth 1 point, but the questions at the end of each reading part are worth more points.
Tip • There is no penalty for wrong answers; thus, if you don’t know, just guess!

Steps for answering vocabulary questions (p. 12) • Find the word/phrase in the passage & read the sentence -Be careful! You may know one definition of the word, but sometimes they use a word in a new or different way.
Vocabulary Steps 2. Look for: -context clues -If you can’t use context clues, look for key words or the tone (+ or -) -word parts
Steps 3. If you don’t know any context clues, key words, or word parts, eliminate answers. Guess and move on to the next question. Do not leave the answer blank and try to come back later!
Reading Skill 2: Referents pp. 17-22 • We are not going to talk in detail about this skill. A referent is the word a pronoun, such as he, she, one, it, refers to. Ex. My dad is coming to visit in May. He has already bought his plane ticket.

If you don’t understand vocabulary, don’t worry. • Look at connectors and punctuation • Try to understand the main points (meanings) and structure of the sentence. • The sentence may refer to other sentences. If it does, quickly read those sentences. • Look at the answer options. • Eliminate wrong answers first, then chose the best answer.
