KAIZEN 2008 CANADIAN COAST GUARD AUXILIARY - PACIFIC
The Principle of Kaizen • Kaizen is a Japanese philosophy that extols an ideal of continuous improvement.
The Principle of Kaizen • It was introduced into the manufacturing world by Toyota in the early 1950s as a way to improve and increase production. • Its goals centre around eliminating waste - of materials, movement and human potential - by standardising procedures and by getting workers and management to think through problems in creative and collaborative ways
How Does Kaizen Apply to The CCGA-P • It empowers our volunteers to interact with the managers, and send in good ideas that may be of benefit to all volunteers at all stations.
What Does Kaizen Need to Work • There is a need for good negotiating skills to sort out the really good ideas from the other ideas.
What Does Kaizen Need to Work “ If some one has a good idea to improve the way an operation is carried out, to save money, or to make a job safer, we need to make sure we listen and we need to make sure we give people the ability to act on that idea and that’s a challenge”.
What Does Kaizen Need to Work • Volunteers rarely buy in to something that is shoved down their throats. • Management needs to encourage volunteers to learn more, ask good questions, present best ideas and push the organisation to be better and more efficient.
What Does Kaizen Need to Work • Kaizen and the culture of continuous change can be uncomfortable , but creating educated volunteers will have a strong advantage.
How Does Kaizen Work? 1. Assess & Reassess Look at the way that something is done , and see if it can be done better. An example could be a training plan - is the current training plan delivering what is needed for your station or the auxiliary. If not, or it needs improving go to 2.
How Does Kaizen Work? 2. Plan and Design Discuss with colleagues what adjustments need to be made. In the example of a training plan, edit the training plan, bring in appropriate training aids, try new powerpoints, or construct quizzes to assess knowledge, then go to 3.
How Does Kaizen Work? 3. Implement Try the new procedures, briefing those involved with it. The new training plan is brought in, briefing all the instructors to achieve a buy in, and briefing all the students as to how the new program will benefit them. Then move to 4.
How Does Kaizen Work? 4. Evaluate See how the procedure worked, and is it doing what it was supposed to achieve. The training plan has improved dramatically training at the station, but at the end of the year, the plan needs to be tweaked to include advanced crew items, or coxswain items. Go to 1.
Kaizen for the CCGA-P? • Look to the future of what we could be. • Offer an invitation to stations to encourage them to collect and forward good ideas. • Be prepared to be challenged. • Stay in touch and share your goals. • Celebrate and encourage learning in everyone including you.
Tips for Volunteers • Talk to your colleagues, discuss ideas and put them on paper • Make the case of the benefit for other volunteers at other stations • Listen and try to align the learning and improvements with the things the organisation is trying to improve • Be inclusive • Think long term
Tips for Volunteers • Communicate and invite people to join • Be patient - learning takes time
Kaizen • Try it!
