Polymer molecular weight (Mw) determination; • 2 methods: primary and secondary methods Primary methods (absolute molecular weight) • Give values that provide a direct estimate of Mw • Examples: end group analysis, colligative properties, light scattering, ultracentrifugation • Difficult to carry out, time consuming and often require expensive apparatus.

  3. Secondary methods • Yield comparisons between the molecular weights of different polymers and must be calibrated by reference to a system that has been studied by one of primary method. • Fast, simple and accurate way to obtain MW • Examples: viscometry, GPC
