  3. Roadrunners are fast animals. They are birds. They can fly but only a teeny bit.

  4. How do they protect themselves? Roadrunners have a few predators. They have to protect themselves from coyotes and owls. They run 15 or 20 miles per hour to get away from a predator.

  5. What do they look like? Roadrunners have striking feathers. They have dark brown wings and tail. Their crest is dark brown with white spots. A crest is a pack of feathers on roadrunners head. A roadruuner’s beak is dark brown. Roadrunners have a nice red or blue patch behind their eyes. Their chest is tan with brown marking. They have long bluish legs.

  6. What do they eat? Roadrunners love to eat rattlesnakes, frogs, rodents and even other birds. Sometimes they have to fight their prey. They have no teeth. Roadrunners only have a beak.

  7. Where do they live? Roadrunners live in hot places in the deserts of North America. They try to find a shady spot in the dry, dry desert.

  8. How Do They Grow? A roadrunner’s life starts out as a egg. The roadrunner stays in the egg for 18 to 20 days. Roadrunners lay 2 to 12 eggs. When they hatch they are called a chick. Their parents teach then to run. When they are an adult they can go and wander off.
