  6. The Atomium was built as the central pavilion of the World Expo 1958 in the capital of Belgium, Brussels. It was designed by engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak as a tribute to scientific progress. It has a height of 102 meters and is one of the tallest buildings in Belgium. Its nine stainless steel spheres with a diameter of 18 meters are joined in a shape that could represent an iron crystal. Six of the spheres are open to the public. Each has two main floors where exhibition halls and other public spaces are located. In the highest part there is a restaurant with a panoramic view. Transport is provided by an elevator in the central vertical tube, as well as escalators leading in connecting pipes. The Atomium was completely renovated in 2004-6. Today, it is the most popular tourist attraction in Brussels, with over half a million annual visitors.
