  6. Cappadocia is a historical region in central Anatolia, Turkey. Thanks to volcanic activity, a thick layer of soft tuff rock was gradually formed in the area, which was subsequently covered by lava. Cliffs, rock towers, columns and chimneys were gradually formed due to weather conditions. For centuries, people dug underground dwellings, storehouses and chapels in the soft stone to protect them from enemies. Gradually, a network of interconnected underground villages was created. Some people still live in cave dwellings that have been converted into houses and hotels. The village of Göreme is considered the tourist capital of Cappadocia. Göreme National Park, with an area of almost 100 km2, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Göreme is also famous for sightseeing flights in hot air balloons.
