The School Ethos • We strive to ensure a safe, caring and friendly environment where students and staff are encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyles • We are a listening school with an ‘open door’ policy • We have clear and robust routes to raising concerns and students and staff know who to go to with any concerns, however small • We are a restorative school where positive relationships between staff, students, parents and other professionals are highly valued and central to exemplary practice • Students are encouraged to be aspirational • We strive to prepare students for lifelong learning and the world beyond school • Employing Staff • Safeguarding is referred to in job adverts and person specifications for vacancies • Interview questions target Child Protection specifically • References are verified • A Single Central Register of staff is maintained by the HR manager and is checked termly by the Chair of Governors • All statutory checks are carried out on staff • Safeguarding information is given to visitors and displayed in reception • Wellbeing Support • We have a multi-layered pastoral system to ensure easy access to support • Student Support Officers in every year who work with students, parents and multiagency teams to ensure safety and wellbeing • A school based Family Support Worker who works closely with students and parents to ensure good attendance • SEN and SALT departments to identify and support the needs of AEN students • Educational Psychologist support • A Student Support Centre • Mentoring • Careers advice and guidance • Two school based counsellors • A drug and alcohol worker • Young Carers’ Programme • Breakfast club • Lunchtime and after school clubs • Resilience programmes focusing on social skills, self esteem and behaviour • Friendship issues resolved through restorative approaches • Sports Mentoring • Assemblies addressing cyber bullying, internet safety, British Values and extremism Safeguarding
Curriculum • We have an inspirational and aspirational curriculum • The school curriculum promotes wellbeing and healthy lifestyles through the teaching of SMSC, physical exercise, cooking and healthy eating, mindfulness and Tai Chi • Our CPSHE curriculum ensures the teaching of sex and relationships, alcohol and substance misuse, internet safety, healthy relationships, British values and extremism, bullying, personal safety , diversity • Relevant current safeguarding issues are addressed in tutor periods • We aim to minimise any barriers to learning through personalised interventions and multiagency work • Our student planners include a ‘keep Safe’ page with contact details of relevant organisations where students can seek help if required for a variety of issues • A safeguarding noticeboard displays relevant messages and information • Regular safeguarding messages published in the weekly e-bulletin • Staff training • A robust induction programme • Regular child protection training • E-safety training • All staff to read Keeping Children Safe In Education document • Governors are training • Training opportunities respond to individual pupil/staff needs • Safe Environment • High standards of maintenance • Daily routines – first day absence phone calls, sign in/out book • Safeguarding statement on the back of visitors’ lanyards • Parent mail & text messaging services for changes to daily routines/emergency school closure • Displays around the school – school charter/ classroom rules; student support • Fire drills – timed & recorded • Site security – electronic gates, CCTV • Risk assessments are undertaken for all school trips and on site events Safeguarding • Parental Engagement • A robust induction programme for Year 6 students • Year 6- 11 parent information evening • Start of term parent information evenings- includes workshops on e-safety and supporting children in the school • Parent questionnaires • E-bulletin information and communication about personal safety and well-being
