EMOTIONS • Emotions: feelings • Emotional Needs: Needs that affect your feelings and sense of well being • Need to love & be loved • Need to belong • Need to make a difference
Anxiety • Anxiety: state of uneasiness, usually associated with a future uncertainty (can be good, to much can be bad) • Panic: feeling of sudden, intense fear • Defense mechanisms: strategies that help people deal with strong emotions • Denial : refusing to accept what is real • Displacement: taking feelings out on someone other than the person who hurt you • Sublimation: taking strong feelings and using them in a positive way

Stress • Stress: physical response to change • Distress: stress that interferes with your life and makes you unhappy or sick • Stressor: anything that causes stress • Negative effects • Headaches, digestion problems, high blood pressure, feel anxious, moody, irritable, withdrawn • Fight or flight response: process by which the body prepares to deal with a stressor • Adrenaline: hormone that gives the body extra energy

Grief • Grief: sorrow caused by loss of a loved one • Grief reaction: process of dealing with strong feelings following any loss • 5 stages of grief • Denial: don’t believe that the loss or disappointment happened • Anger: bitterness • Bargaining: make a deal to fix the disappointment • Depression: deep sadness associated with realization that loss is permanent • Acceptance: come to terms with the loss and ready to move on
Coping • Coping strategies: ways of dealing with the sense of loss people feel at the death of someone close • Sadness, crying, sharing with someone • Helping others cope • Let the person decide how you can help them • Respect the person’s feelings • Let the person grieve at their own pace
