  1. Welcome to Earth Science!

  2. Goals of Earth Science

  3. What is Earth Science? Earth Science covers everything from the jewelry you wear, the weather outside, to discovery of new organisms on our planet. But to simplify, Earth Science Can be divided into 4 major groups. Meteorology Astronomy Oceanography Geology

  4. Astronomy *Astr- means star • -onomy means measurement or management * Astronomy is the study of objects beyond Earth’s boundaries or atmosphere *Moon, stars, planets *space shuttle and telescopes

  5. Meteorology • Meteor- means raised from the ground, between * It’s the study of the air (atmosphere) that surrounds our planet * Clouds * Weather and climate * Global Warming

  6. Geology • Geo- means land * Geology is the study of materials that make up the Earth’s land * rocks and minerals * plate tectonics * erosion and soil

  7. Oceanography * Oceanography is the study of the Earth’s oceans * Waves and Tides *Tsunamis and Hurricanes

  8. Earth’s Systems • Scientists have divided the Earth into 4 main systems • Each system is unique, different • All systems work together

  9. Gases that surround the planet • (78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% water, carbon dioxide, etc) • Necessary for us to breathe • Protects from the sun’s harmful rays • Keep the Earth’s temperature from getting too hot ATMOSPHERE

  10. Lithosphere • Lith- means stone • -sphere means ball • Lithosphere is the Earth’s outer layer that includes the solid outer most part, the crust • It also includes the mantle, the section right under the crust

  11. Hydrosphere • Hydro- means water • -sphere means ball • The hydrosphere deals with the oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and glaciers • 97% of Earth’s water is salt water

  12. Biosphere • Bio-means life • -sphere means ball • Biosphere is all organisms on Earth as well as the environment they live in • This includes you! And everything deep within the ocean to the mountain tops • Nowhere else has evidence of life been found

  13. How they all work together • Atmosphere • Lithosphere • Hydrosphere • Biosphere • These are interdependent systems. The atmosphere formed due to action of volcanoes and oxygen. Which is now influences the atmosphere

  14. Earth Science & Today • So how might each of these systems affect you?

  15. Earth Science  + = Welcome to Earth Science. Be prepared to embark upon a journey in which your enthusiasm, attention, and expertise will be needed. To infinity and beyond!!!
