  5. Structure of Endoplasmic Reticulum • Rough E.R. • is a network of tubules, vesicles and sacs that are interconnected • endoplasmic reticulum which gets its name from the presence of ribosomes on its surface • Rough ER looks like sheets of bumpy membranes • Smooth E.R. • Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is a small part of the endoplasmic reticulum, but is very prominent in some cells, like, those in the liver, adrenal cortex, and muscles. • smooth ER looks more like tubes

  6. Lumen • The lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the area enclosed by the endoplasmic reticulum membrane, an extensive network of membrane tubules, vesicles and flattened cisternae (sac-like structures) found throughout the eukaryotic cell, especially those responsible for the production of hormones and other secretory products.

  7. Functions of Rough E.R. • The roughness is caused because of ribosomes on the surface • is the production and processing of specific proteins at ribosomal sites that are later exported. • creation of two types of proteins. • One is the type which fortifies and gets embedded into the reticulum membrane. • The other types are water soluble membranes, which, after creation at ribosomal sites, pass through the membrane and into the lumen. • is to transport these ready proteins to the sites where they are required. • They may also be sent to the Golgi bodies for further advanced processing, through vesicles.

  8. Functions of Smooth E.R. • is an important animal, as well as plant cell organelle • It takes part in several metabolic processes, besides providing surface area for the action of the enzymes. • It also serves as storage space for several important enzymes. • Among the various metabolic processes, smooth endoplasmic reticulum plays an important role in carbohydrate metabolism and synthesis of lipids and steroids.
