  4. Wealthy investors started the Virginia Company to start new settlements • Some wanted gold and silvers • Others wanted to trade for furs, cut trees for lumber, plant vineyards for wine • The king issued a charter which granted the company to found a colony called Virginia

  5. 100 men sailed to Chesapeake Bay and built the first permanent English settlement called Jamestown • Located in a swap, bugs were prominent in the summer causing deaths due to disease • Many colonists did not do any farm work; spent time looking for gold • Local natives gave assistance but only 38 colonists survived year one

  6. John Smith came to the colony to take charge • Set rules like “No work, No eat” • Jamestown turned around leading more colonists to settle • Smith raided native tribes for more food • Smith returned to England after a year and Jamestown went downhill • Natives refused to help during the “starving time”

  7. The Virginia Company supported the colony by sending more people • Growing tobacco lead to financial success for colonists • Colonists created the House of Burgesses as a lawmaking body in a representative government • Africans came to Virginia as slaves in 1619 • Had a chance to work for their freedom

  8. In the 1500s people could be punished for their religious beliefs • A group wanted to separate from the Church of England and fled to the Netherlands • These “Separatists” were persecuted for their beliefs • This group would become pilgrims and leave to settle in Virginia

  9. Storms blew the boat of course landing the Pilgrims in Massachusetts • Called new home Plymouth after an English port • Not being in Virginia the group thought the rules of the Virginia Company did not apply • Men signed the Mayflower Compact which called for just and equal laws and elected officeholders • The Mayflower Compact was the second step toward self-government

  10. Pilgrims arrived too late to plant crops and did not have enough food the first winter • Half the colonists died during the winter • Local natives helped the Pilgrims that spring • Squanto showed Pilgrims how to plant local vegetables and catch eels • That fall the Pilgrims gave thanks for their good fortune.
