Why change Assessment Systems? • The Common Core State Standards have been adopted as the South Carolina standards in ELA and mathematics • Current assessments are not aligned to these standards • The State Board of Education has adopted the assessments being developed by theSmarter Balanced Assessment Consortium
Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Assessment System • Group of states working together to develop assessments to be administered beginning in the 2014-15 school year • Aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) • Measure progress toward college- and career-readiness • English language arts/literacy and mathematics • Grades 3-8 and 11 • Computer Adaptive Tests
Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Assessment System • Formative Assessment Tools • Resources for teachers • Interim Assessments • Optional • Same scale as summative assessments • Summative Assessments • Computer adaptive tests • Performance tasks

Testing Schedule • Small Scale Trials - completed • October 15 to November 2, 2012 • Small sample of schools from each governing state • Pilot Testing • February – May, 2013 • Representative sample from each state selected for data analyses • All remaining schools in consortium states invited to participate
