What are Aerosols An aerosol is a piece of matter. It can be a solid or a liquid. Aerosols are larger than a molecule but just small enough to stay in the atmosphere. Natural aerosols include salt from the sea, pieces of clay from the weathering of rocks, fires, and volcanic ash. Zach Mundy

Thermosphere: jordan scott • Layer farthest away from the earth • Nitrogen and oxygen absorb solar radiation • Temperatures above 2,000 degrees Celsius
Mesosphere • Coldest layer of the atmosphere • Temperatures get as low as -93 degrees Celsius!!!! Jordan scott
Stratosphere • Temperatures rise as altitude increases. • Contains Ozone: absorbs the suns UV radiation and warms the air. Its purpose is to reduce the amount of UV radiation that reaches earth. (Hole in the ozone Layer) Jordan scott
Troposphere • Layer closest planet earth • Densest atmospheric layer. • almost all of our weather occurs here! • Temperature decreases as altitude increases!! Jordan scott
Radiation Radiation is the transfer of heat energy by electromagnetic waves. Radiation can be seen on sunny days
Conduction • Is the transfer of heat from one molecule to another within a substance. • When you take a pin and hold it between your fingers and light the end with the lighter and you feel the heat is an ex of conduction.
Convection • Convection is the transfer of heat through a liquid, such as water or air. • Convection moves heat up into the atmosphere but in order to move to other regions it moves by wind.
Some currents of air are less dense when warmed by the earths surface rise into the atmosphere and denser cold air sinks to the ground. As currents rise they begin to cool eventually the current becomes more dense than the air around it and sinks instead of rising. The air comes back to the earth and is heated again. Then starts to rise. This is a circular continuous pattern called convection current
Greenhouse Effect • Sunlight that goes on the Earth’s atmosphere heats up the Earth’s surface. • Earth’s surface circulates heat back to the atmosphere, some heat goes to space. • The rest of the heat is taken in by the greenhouse gases. • Heat then goes back to the Earth’s surface. • When the gas traps the heat near Earth, it is also known as the greenhouse effect.
Greenhouse Gases • Most common greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide methane, and nitrous oxide. • Amounts of water depends on natural processes. • The amounts of carbon dioxide and methane depend on natural and industrial processes.
