Finding the author inside us. Focus: Expanding our ideas
Is my idea the right one? Often students say, “I just ran out of things to write.” So... before beginning to write, ask yourself…. Is this topic ‘big enough’? Have I got enough ideas to make this writing work?
Strategies to try. See if the following strategies can help you to fill your page before you even begin to write seriously.
Strategy 1 3 word phrases in 3 minutes
My example - My dog A big puppy Brindle and white Always wagging tail Long gangly legs Hunter-like movements A total trainwreck Eats ridiculously quickly White as snow
Did you notice? • Descriptions went beyond just what you see. • Some words were quite specific – hunter-like • Some words were usual but created a strong image – trainwreck
Now you try one …. • Select an idea/ topic you would like to write more about. • Use your thinking time to think about what your topic looks like and acts like • Go for it!
Strategy 2 Thinking link
Sometimes we get great ideas from letting our minds go.... Love High school romance – “the big break up” Romeo & Juliet – reading shakespeare / movie Famous romances My parents Music – “warm whisper”
Did you notice? • The ideas moved in different directions • Some quotes and topics were written • This doesn’t make much sense to anyone but the author who knows what these ideas mean
Your turn…… Consider the theme LOVE See how many ideas you can link that are meaningful to YOU.
Before you draft……. Consider using : 3 in 3 Think link
