November 2004 doc: IEEE 802.11-04/1441r0 TGt/WNM CollaborationTGt Performance to be WNM managed Joe Kwak, InterDigital Victoria Poncini, Microsoft Kwak( InterDigital), Poncini (Microsoft)
Outline • TGT Purpose, output • WNM Purpose, output • Common concerns • Useful TGT metrics---> new WNM managed parameters • Conclusions Kwak( InterDigital), Poncini (Microsoft)
TGT Purpose • To enable testing, comparison, and deployment planning of 802.11 WLAN devices based on a common and accepted set of performance metrics, measurement methodologies and test conditions • This includes identification of useful performance metrics • Output captured in Recommended Practice • Many identified metrics may not be defined in 802.11 standard Kwak( InterDigital), Poncini (Microsoft)
WNM Purpose • To effect a complete and coherent upper layer interface for managing 802.11 devices in wireless networks • Device management means restricted to items within a STA (or AP). • Management to include configuration management, resource management, access and security management, and performance management. • In each case the "management” implies the need for monitoring and control of STA parameters. • Certain TGt metrics may be candidates for standardization as new management parameters in STAs. Kwak( InterDigital), Poncini (Microsoft)
TGt metrics for WNM • TGt will identify relevant metrics, sub-metrics and parameters useful for performance testing and performance prediction. • Any metric or sub-metric should be included in WNM amendment IF: • It is not already defined in the standard AND IF • It affects STA or network performance OR IF • It is a test configuration control parameter which should be standardized in all STAs to permit uniform testing. • WNM will implement measurement or reporting of metrics for management. • WNM will provide monitoring and control of parameters for management. Kwak( InterDigital), Poncini (Microsoft)
Application Transport Data Link Physical Layer Parking Lot for Metrics and Sub-metrics Propose that as metrics are identified and classified, a WNM “flag” be used to indicate which metrics should be added to the standard. Performance metrics by OSI model layers Mxyz ** Mxyz Mxyz ** Mxyz Mxyz Mxyz ** Mxyz ** = WNM flag Kwak( InterDigital), Poncini (Microsoft)
TGt - WNM Coordination • TGt’s schedule leads WNM’s significantly, so timeline supports TGt output--->WNM. • Propose that relationship be informal • TGt attendees may input contributions to WNM • WNM attendees may base contributions on TGt work • Attendees of both groups would be ideal volunteers for this effort • Attendees from InterDigital, Microsoft and other companies will promote this work. Kwak( InterDigital), Poncini (Microsoft)
Conclusions • TGt work will identify metrics and parameters useful for performance testing, prediction and for management. • TGt’s Recommended Practice output document cannot standardize any new metric or parameter within 802.11 STAs. • WNM is tasked with amending the 802.11 standard for management purposes. • It is expected that certain metrics identified for testing and prediction in TGt should be standardized for management in WNM.
