  2. Background • Memorializes the birth, growth, preservation, and development of the United State of America. • Between 1927 and 1941, Gutzon Borgum and 400 workers sculpted the 60 foot busts of four U.S. Presidents to represent the first 150 years of American History.

  3. How it was Created • Mount Rushmore was selected in South Dakota because of its natural beauty • The mountain is 5725 feet high • Sculpted in the mountain’s GRANITE with large drills and by hand • Cost only $1 Million (considered priceless today) • Took 14 years to complete

  4. Shrine of Democracy • This is a called a “Shrine of Democracy” because it’s is so beautiful, immense in size, and inspires a patriotic spirit in all who view it

  5. Some facts • Mount Rushmore National Park sits on 127,845 acres of land in South Dakota • More than 2,000,000 people visit the park each year • The annual budget for the park is about 2.5 million dollars

George Washington - first U.S. President and commander of the Revolutionary Army Thomas Jefferson - 3rd President, author of the Declaration of Independence, and advocate of westward expansion Abraham Lincoln - 16th President, whose leadership restored the union and ended slavery on U.S. soil Theodore Roosevelt - 26th President who promoted construction of the Panama Canal and promoted conservation and business reform.
