  2. Kelp Forest Ecosystems • Member of a Group called algae. • Range from microscopic to over 35m (or 100 ft) • Seaweed is algae that is visible without a microscope. • Simpler than most land plants. • No roots • No flowers • No stems • No leaves GIANT Kelp

  3. Algae • Algae occur in virtually any habitat on earth. • Water must be present (even if short time). • All major bodies of water have algae in abundance, including lakes, small streams, large rivers, and even waterfalls.

  4. Algae show a broad range of complexity. They range from tiny, microscopic forms, to very complex forms such as the kelps.

  5. Three types of Seaweed Brown algae- Kelp Green algae- Sea Lettuce Red algae- Irish Moss

  6. Kelp • Over 100 species • 20 Species along the California Coast • Giant Kelp is the largest • Needs:- Cool water below 70° F/ 21° C • - Clear water - Hard surface for attachment - Nutrients
