Dare to Dream Jigsaw 8th Grade: Careers in the Community Microsoft, 2011
Review & Objective • Last class you read a story about a person in history (distant or near history) that overcame obstacles to reach his/her career goals. • You made a Bio-Cube to summarize that person’s life. • Today, you will share your Bio-Cubes with others and learn about the stories of many people who have met their career goals despite challenges.
Jigsaw – Step 1 • Form a small group with the other people in the class who created a Bio-Cube for the same person as you. • Share your cubes and compare your responses on each section. Make sure that the information you have gathered matches the information that others have gathered. • Make revisions/modifications as necessary
Jigsaw – Step 2 • Number off within your group. • Form a larger group with all like-numbered classmates. • Each group should be made up of students who are presenting on different people from history. • Take turns within the group presenting your Bio-Cubes.
Jigsaw – Step 3 • Once everyone has presented, discuss the following: • What does each of these people have in common? • What kind of mindset did each of these individuals have? What difference did that make for each person? • How were they able to overcome obstacles?
Dare to Dream! • Each of us have obstacles to overcome. • Some are inside ourselves and some are outside ourselves. • The attitude with which we meet these obstacles can mean the difference between ultimate failure or success. • You can never go higher than you dream, so accept the challenge and Dare to Dream! Microsoft, 2011
Post-Test • Name someone in history who overcame obstacles in order to achieve his/her career goals. • What obstacles did he/she face? • How was he/she able to overcome the obstacles to succeed in his/her career?
