Idaho Transportation Department’sResident Engineer Academy • Goal: Educate Department personnel on an RE’s myriad responsibilities for the administration of construction contracts. • The target audience is REs, their construction project managers and Construction Section associates. • Courses were held in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Another will be held this year
The RE Academy is divided into four sessions. • Three sessions take place one week per month for three successive months. • Participants must attend all three sessions. • The sessions are held at off-campus sites conducive to the intense training provided. • Each session lasts from 1:00 PM on Monday until noon on Friday. • The fourth session “Essential of Management” may be taken before or after the three session and is offered through the Human Resources Department.
The successive three sessions include role-playing, situational problem solving and other participatory activities gleaned from real experiences to keep attendees actively involved. • Training staff support the subject matter experts and guest speakers who present the materials. • All six assistant district engineers are presenters. • The management session requires participants to take part in a number of activities that simulate duties that managers are expected to perform.
