The Problem and Efforts • Current stocks of HEU ~ 1,300-1,900 tonnes and current stocks of separated Pu ~ 475-525 tonnes • To date, the US has helped remove all the HEU from more than 47 facilities in countries around the world. • US/Russia HEU Purchase agreement (500 tonnes of HEU downblended to LEU for reactor fuel ($8 billion, ends in 2013) • US downblended175 tonnes • US/Russia Agreed to use 34 tonnes of excess Pu for reactor fuel
