  2. = use of insects in legal investigations Insects – class in Phylum Arthropoda Invertebrate, segmented body, jointed appendages, exoskeleton (chitin)

  4. Head – brain, antenna, eyes, mouthparts • Thorax – 3 pair of legs, 2 pair of wings (if present) • Abdomen – movement, reproductive organs, digestive system

  5. 29 orders • 2 most important = Diptera (flies) and Coleoptera (beetles) • Early decomp blowflies lay eggs • Bloated decomp  = maggots

  6. Late decomp  beetles • Final decomp  beetles & soil-dwelling insects • So, must collect soil samples from under body
