CH. 2 SEC.1 DESCRIBING MATTER
GOAL • STUDENTS- WILL LEARN ABOUT MATTER AND ITS CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES.
MATTER • MATTER- IS ANYTHING THAT HAS MASS AND TAKES UP SPACE. • KEY – MATTER IS EVERYTHING AROUND YOU: FROM THINGS YOU CAN’T SEE LIKE AIR, TO THE DESK, CHAIR, AND EVEN YOU. • BUT YOUR FEELINGS, THOUGHTS, ETC ARE NOT MATTER!!!
Can matter be invisible? • Answer? Why?
SUBSTANCE • SUBSTANCE- IS A SINGLE TYPE OF MATTER THAT IS PURE- MEANING IT ALWAYS HAS A SPECIFIC MAKEUP- OR COMPOSITION- AND A SPECIFIC SET OF PROPERTIES. • EX- SALT, SUGAR • KEY- EVERY FORM OF MATTER HAS TWO KINDS OF PROPERTIES- PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES • PHYSICAL PROPERTIES- IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF A SUBSTANCE THAT CAN BE OBSERVED WITHOUT CHANGING IT INTO ANOTHER SUBSTANCE. EX -DENSITY, HARDNESS, FREEZING AND MELTING POINTS, SGL, COLOR, TEXTURE
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES • CHEMICAL PROPERTY- IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF A SUBSTANCE THAT DESCRIBES IS ABILITY TO CHANGE INTO DIFFERENT SUBSTANCES. WHEN YOU BURN SOMETHING YOU CHANGE ITS CHEMICAL PROP. • EX- BURNING WOOD, RUSTING IRON
ELEMENTS • ELEMENT- IS A PURE SUBSTANCE THAT CANNOT BE BROKEN DOWN INTO ANY OTHER SUBSTANCE • KEY- ELEMENTS ARE THE SIMPLEST SUBSTANCES • EX - COPPER, GOLD, OXYGEN
PARTICLES OF ELEMENTS • ATOM- IS THE BASIC PARTICLE FROM WHICH ALL ELEMENTS ARE MADE. • KEY- ATOMS HAVE THE ABILITY TO COMBINE WITH OTHER ATOMS. • CHEMICAL BOND- WHEN ATOMS COMBINE AND THE FORCE OF ATTRACTION FORMS A NEW SUBSTANCE • MOLECULES- GROUPS OF TWO OR MORE ATOMS HELD TOGETHER BY A CHEMICAL BOND. EX-H2O , CO2, …..C12H22O11
Molecules • http://apps.theodoregray.com/molecules
COMPOUNDS • COMPOUND- A SUBSTANCE MADE OF TWO OR MORE ELEMENTS CHEMICALLY COMBINED IN SET RATIO. • KEY- WHEN ELEMENTS ARE CHEMICALLY COMBINED THEY FORM COMPOUNDS HAVING PROPERTIES THAT ARE DIFFERENT THAN THE INDIVIDUAL ELEMENTS.
MIXTURES • MIXTURES- 2 OR MORE SUBSTANCES NOT CHEMICALLY COMBINED. • EX- SALAD, SOIL • 2 TYPES • HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE- YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENT PARTS. EX SALAD • HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE- CANT SEE THE PARTS. EX- SUGAR WATER
SECTION 1 ASSESSMENT • WRITE THE QUESTION AND ANSWER FROM THE TEXT BOOK P. 67 • 1-AB • 2-AB • 3-AB
