Dr. Olga Kolpakova, Head of Prevention Programs at Regional NGO Stellit, shares the results of consultations with children. The aim was to raise awareness, involve children in decision-making, and gather their recommendations for improving the lives of child victims of violence and exploitation.

Aims of consultations with children Aims of consultations: Awareness-raising of the participating children of the sources of risk and resilience; Increase the feeling of importance of child victims of violence and exploitation by hearing their recommendations for other children and for parents, professionals and officials; Involve children in the work of the Council of the Baltic Sea States and the Nordic Council of Ministers and allow their recommendations to inform the programming, advocacy and policy making for children in the Baltic Sea Region.
Facilities, facilitators, participants, tools When? Where? By whom consultations were conducted? Conducted by psychologists of the shelter “Transit” with children staying at the shelter “Transit” on September 8th and 11th, 2017. Participants Consultation on 8th September: 2 girls and 1 boy aged 15 to 17, 1 person from Uzbekistan, 1 person from Tajikistan, 1 person from Russia. Consultation on 11th September: 3 boys aged 9 to 11, 1 person from Russia, 2 persons from Tajikistan. Tools Children were asked to create the story of a child who is separated from his or her parents, is living in a difficult and risky situation and is trying to leave this situation. Children were asked to discuss and make a collage of the ideal shelter home for children.

Results: How the child could take care about him/herself? Ask someone for food Runaway and get home by foot/ hitch-hiking Find a job, earn money, buy a phone and get in touch with relatives Do something to attract attention of the police Runaway and sleep in cellars Hide documents from exploiters or run away without documents Wait until parents find the child
Results: How can people recognize that the child is in difficult situation? Sad Has bruise or injuries Can hardly work Tired Walks back and forth Spends free time alone

Results:qualities of the staff of the ideal shelter Should be more male staff Kind To some extent strict Confident Should be able to tell the child the truth but to prepare for this information first Should take into account opinion of the child Should respect children, be able to explain everything in a calm way Should regard all the children as equal, should not have those whom they like more and whom they like less Should have a sense of humor Should tell stories of other children, give examples to convince the child what is right and what is wrong
