HymnHere I am, Lord 1. I, the Lord of sea and sky, I have heard My people cry. All who dwell in dark and sin, My hand will save. I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear My light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord, is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night.I will go Lord, if You lead me.I will hold Your people in my heart.
2. I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have born my peoples pain. I have wept for love of them, they turn away. I will break their hearts of stone, Give them hearts for love alone. I will speak My word to them, Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord, is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night.I will go Lord, if You lead me.I will hold Your people in my heart. 6
3. I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them, My hand will save. Finest bread I will provide, Till their hearts be satisfied. I will give My life to them, Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord, is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night.I will go Lord, if You lead me.I will hold Your people in my heart. 7

Word of God Psalm 96 (NRSV) O sing to the Lord a new song;sing to the Lord, all the earth.2 Sing to the Lord, bless God’s name;tell of his salvation from day to day.3 Declare God’s glory among the nations, God’s marvelous works among all the peoples. 14
4 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;God is to be revered above all gods.5 For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.6 Honour and majesty are before God; strength and beauty are in God’s sanctuary. 7 Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due God’s name;bring an offering, and come into God’s courts.9 Worship the Lord in holy splendour;tremble before the Lord, all the earth. 15
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord is Sovereign! The world is firmly established; it shall never be moved. The Lord will judge the peoples with equity.”11 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;let the sea roar, and all that fills it;12 let the field exult, and everything in it.Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy13 before the Lord; for the Lord is coming, for the Lord is coming to judge the earth. The Lord will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with the Lord’s truth. Praise Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
FIRST SCRIPTURE READING 1 Kings 12: 21-33 (NRSV) 21 When Rehoboam came to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, one hundred eighty thousand chosen troops to fight against the house of Israel, to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam son of Solomon. 22 But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God: 23 Say to King Rehoboam of Judah, son of Solomon, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, 24 “Thus says the Lord, You shall not go up or fight against your kindred the people of Israel. Let everyone go home, for this thing is from me.” So they heeded the word of the Lord and went home again, according to the word of the Lord.
25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and resided there; he went out from there and built Penuel. 26 Then Jeroboam said to himself, “Now the kingdom may well revert to the house of David. 27 If this people continues to go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, the heart of this people will turn again to their master, King Rehoboam of Judah; they will kill me and return to King Rehoboam of Judah.” 28 So the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold. He said to the people, “You have gone up to Jerusalem long enough. Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” 29 He set one in Bethel, and the other he put in Dan. 18
30 And this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one at Bethel and before the other as far as Dan. 31 He also made houses on high places, and appointed priests from among all the people, who were not Levites. 32 Jeroboam appointed a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the festival that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar; so he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made. 33 He went up to the altar that he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month that he alone had devised; he appointed a festival for the people of Israel, and he went up to the altar to offer incense. 19
CanticleSong of Zachariah Blessed are you O Lord the God of Israel: for you have come to your people and set them free. You, O Lord, have raised up for us a mighty Saviour: born of the house of your servant David. Through the holy prophets you promised from of old: that you would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us. You promised to show mercy to our forebears: and to remember your holy covenant. This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham: to set us free from the hands of our enemies. Free to worship you without fear: holy and righteous in your sight all the days of our life.
You my child shall be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way. To give his people knowledge of salvation: by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God: the dawn from on high shall break upon us. To shine upon those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death: and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Praise Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
SECOND SCRIPTURE READING Acts 4: 13-31 (NRSV) The Lesson is read in Afrikaans 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized them as companions of Jesus. 14 When they saw the man who had been cured standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 So they ordered them to leave the council while they discussed the matter with one another. 16 They said, “What will we do with them? For it is obvious to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable sign has been done through them; we cannot deny it. 17 But to keep it from spreading further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”
18 So they called them and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge; 20 for we cannot keep from speaking about what we have seen and heard.” 21 After threatening them again, they let them go, finding no way to punish them because of the people, for all of them praised God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing had been performed was more than forty years old. 23
The Believers Pray for Boldness 23 After they were released, they went to their friends[a] and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard it, they raised their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth, the sea, and everything in them, 25 it is you who said by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant: ‘Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples imagine vain things?26 The kings of the earth took their stand, and the rulers have gathered together against the Lord and against his Messiah.’ 24
27 For in this city, in fact, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look at their threats, and grant to your servants to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 When they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God with boldness. Here ends the lesson. 25
CanticleSong of the Church We praise you O God: we acclaim you as Lord. All creation worships you: the Father everlasting. To you all angels all the powers of heaven: cherubim and seraphim sing in endless praise. Holy holyholy Lord God of power and might: heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you: the noble fellowship of prophets praise you the white-robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you: Father of majesty unbounded. Your true and only Son worthy of worship: and the Holy Spirit advocate and guide.
CanticleSong of the Church You Christ are the King of glory: the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free: you humbly chose the Virgin’s womb. You overcame the sting of death: and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God’s right hand in glory: we believe that you will come to be our judge. Come then Lord and help your people: bought with the price of your own blood. And bring us with your saints: to glory everlasting.
The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. 30
Our Parent in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen 31
