Birds of a Feather - Realism Mindi Anderson, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC, ANEF Assistant Professor The University of Texas at Arlington, College of Nursing
Problem/Opportunity Making simulations “real-enough” is important to consider (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.) Extends to students learning how to do simulation within a master’s level course, Simulation Application in Nursing (Anderson, 2010)
Solution Added lecture on realism Students have an opportunity to take the Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC) on-line course on Maximizing Realism (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.).
Solution • Use moulage(makeup) (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.). • Students have a day where they make “vomit” • Different supplies/recipe cards • Students vote = best recipe
Solution Practice making bruises Various paints Vote on best Watch staining!!! Might use spare parts (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.)
Other Ways- Increase Realism • Consider: • Participant senses • Standardized patients • Instructor attitude/behavioral guidelines • Hybrids • Appropriate roles within simulation (Anderson & Ackermann, n. d.).
Outcome Realistic simulation scenarios Students have “fun” while learning
