Introduction • In this project, we had to choose an invention or innovation and show what problem it solved and the new problems it created. • I choose an escalator, an escalator is what humans created to make life easier. What you do is stand on a stair and the stair takes you to another floor.
Problem • The problem was to get people from one floor to another more quickly. • Before escalators, people had to do something to get to another floor, they got tired.
How it Works • What people can see is that there are stairs moving up or down the escalator. What people can’t see is that there are 2 wheels, one on each floor, that move the stairs like the tracks of a tank.
Positives and Negatives • Its faster • Easier (than an elevator) • It can get a lot of people at a time. • Humans do not have to get tired by walking up and down the stairs to get to another floor. • Use it without any effort. • Can cause major injuries. • Can’t use it with trolleys or buggies. • Lack of exercise for people, making them lazy. • May cause obesity.
Extras • The inventor of the escalator, Nathan Ames, designed it in 1859, but he died in 1860 before having a chance to build it properly. So another inventor, Jesse W. Reno, designed the escalator in 1892 and it was used as a fun ride like a roller coaster in Old Iron Pier in Coney Island.
What’s Next? Improvements to the escalator:- Making a multi level escalator. Making the escalator go around corners. Making the stair bigger for safety. Making the stairs wider to carry more people. Making each stair big enough to carry a buggy/trolley. Making the handrail the same speed as the stairs.
Conclusion • Escalators are a fantastic invention because there are more people using them safely than getting injured. Using escalators means, you have more energy to carry bigger bags for a longer time making your shopping trip even more AMAZING!
