Population Dynamics Season 1 Introduction – what is the basic knowledge we need to understand the dynamic changing of populations?
Outline of Episode • Key terms • Important Concepts • Unit Topics
Key Terms • LEDC • MEDC • Birth Rate (BR) • Death Rate (DR) • Migration • Age Group • Dependents • Economically active • Life expectancy • Natural Increase • Declining, Increasing and Balanced Populations • Population Distribution • Population Density • Population Structure • Population Pyramid • Demographic Transition Model
LEDC – Less Economically Developed Country • MEDC – More Economically Developed Country • Birth rate – number of births per 1,000 of the population per year • Death rate - number of deaths per 1,000 of the population per year
Migration – the movement of people in and out of an area. • Age Group – a grouping of certain ages to aid in collection and use of statistics • Dependents – people who rely on others for support (social or economic) • Economically active – people who are of working age
Life expectancy – how long a person is expected to live from a certain age • Natural Increase – the rise of a population due to more births than deaths • Declining, Increasing and Balanced Populations • Declining = more deaths than births • Increasing = more births than deaths • Balanced = birth and death rates are equal
Population Distribution – The way in which people are spread across a given area (local, regional, national, global) • Population Density – Population density is the average number of people per square kilometre • Population Structure – The parts or composition of a population
Population Pyramid – a graph that shows the distribution of various age groups in a population (not necessarily a pyramid!) • Demographic Transition Model – a graph that shows a population transition from high birth and death rate, to a declining overall population – has 5 stages.
Important Concepts • Population Growth • Population Structures • Population Change
