  7. Context To put your discussion into context, you must provide background information about the quotation. Here, you are demonstrating that you can clearly identify the event that has just happened or is about to happen in the work of literature.

  8. Analysis Analyze the passage. This involves making specific reference to the words of the passage [evidence] and understanding the passage in terms of the author’s purpose and all the elements that go into creating the total effect- development of character, plot, theme, style, and structure. You are trying to explain what these various elements do, how they word or why they are effective.

  9. Character Plot Does the passage Advance the plot? Involve a turning point? Show characters in conflict? Provide the resolution? Create suspense? Offer comic relief? Provide important background information? Does the passage • Introduce a character (directly or indirectly)? • Reveal a character’s personality? • Show characters in conflict? • Reveal a relationship between characters? • Explain the motivation of a character? • Create sympathy (pathos) for a character?
