Europe’s Energy Challenges • Insuring Security of Supply, Sustainability and Competitiveness • Only Energy Efficiency acts on all three aspects • Achieving 20% energy efficiency in 2020 will lead to: • Investment of 24b€/year • Increased GDP of 34b€ • Reduction in energy generation investement of 6b€/year and in energy consumption of 38b€/year • Estimated overall saving of 20b€/year in Europe (source: non-paper of the services of the EC on Energy Efficiency Directive – April 2012)

Conclusions • Energy Efficiency, by reducting consumption, leads to lower prices of energy, thus increasing competitiveness and security of supply; • Supporting Energy Efficiency in the context of Human Smart Cities: Smart Cities and Communities Initiative • New Innovative close-to-market projects (CIP): SMART CAMPUS • Innovative International markets for SMEs working on ICT for Energy Efficiency • Making way to the Internet of Energy, unbundling energy markets and implementing bold policies and allocating significant budget for investments in Energy Efficiency • It is time to shift the focus to the consumers, and support a human-centric approach towards Energy in Europe, for a better and more resilient society.
