  1. Water Conservation LT 6G: Describe several methods of water conservation.

  2. Hook/IBE • Watch video and answer the following questions on your handout: • Describe how our waters get polluted and the impact of the pollution on the earth? • Describe the process by which we pump groundwater to the surface the impact of this pumping groundwater on the earth? • Describe how we are causing the rapid deforestation of the earth and the impact of this on earth.

  3. J-TPS • Question: Why do you think we are currently experiencing a world water crisis? What do you think we can do about it?

  4. Privatization • The control of water by privately owned corporations. How did water become privatized on a global basis? How do you think that privatization is contributing to the world’s water crisis?

  5. Water Wars • What is a water war? • Describe how privatization of water in Bolivia lead to a “water war”? • What do you think happened as a result of this?

  6. Solving the Water Crisis • What happened in Bolivia as a result of the revolt by its people? • How can we as individuals fight against the privatization of water? • Describe the Project Blue Alternative. How do you think this makes use of the normal hydrologic cycle? • What else can be done to conserve water?

  7. Water conservation • Irrigation • Systems used to irrigate crops • Gravity flow • Drip Irrigation* • Center pivot* • Other options • Line canals • Irrigate at night • Monitor soil moisture • Polyculture • Organic farming • Avoid water-thirsty crops in dry areas • Irrigate with treated waste water • Import water-intensive crops and meat

  8. Water Conservation • Industry and Homes • Redesign manufacturing processes to use less water • Recycle water in industry • Landscape yards with plants that require less water • Use drip irrigation • Fix water leaks • Use water meters • Raise water prices

  9. Water Conservation • Industry and Homes • Use waterless composting toilets • Require water conservation in water-short cities • Use water-saving toilets, showerheads, and front-loading clothes washers • Collect and reuse household water to irrigate lawns and nonedible plants • Purify and reuse water for houses, apartments, and office buildings

  10. Water Conservation • Removing Waste • Current Process: use of fresh water to remove waste • Alternative • Mimic nature by applying nutrient cycling and use the nutrient rich sludge • Ban the discharge of toxic chemicals • Waterless composting toilets • Convert fecal matter to small, dry, odorless soil-like humus that can be removed and used as fertilizer
