Facts • Nelson Mandela was born on the 18th of July 1918 in a tiny village called Qunu in South Africa • He grew up in a country where black people could not vote and were very badly treated. • They had to carry passes everywhere they went. This used to annoy Mandela very much. • He passionately believed in equality. • Mandela dedicated his for equality and justice for all. • He spent 27 years in prison. • He was in both Pollsmoor prison and Robben island prison. • He served as South Africa's first black president
His life Nelson Mandela was a very intelligent boy. His father thought he was so intelligent that he sent Nelson to school. Nelson was the first child in his family to go to school. One day when he returned from school he found out his father had died. He was then adopted by the new chief of his tribe and his adopted father sent him back to school. At he age of 16 his father sent him to boarding school and then to college. After finishing his degree on law he became interested with politics. In 1942 he joined the A.N.C. (African National Congress) and they fought for black peoples rights. He was arrested for 27 years and when he was freed in 1990 and in 1991 he became president of the A.N.C. . In 1993 he received the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1994 he became the first black president of South Africa. Nelson Mandela died on the 5th of December of 2013.
