Definitions • Euphemisms- An agreeable or inoffensive expressions that is substituted for an expression that may offend the hearer or suggest something is unpleasant. • Dysphemism- A word or phrase used to produce a negative effect on a reader’s or listeners attitude about something or to minimize the positive associations the thing may have.

  3. Examples • Euphemism- • “ you have an upcoming test” • Euphemism Translate “ You have a Learning opportunity coming up” • "we put the dog to sleep" rather than "we killed the dog" • Dysphemism's- • Speakers resort to dysphemism to talk about people and things that frustrate and annoy them, that they disapprove of and wish to disparage. • Curses, name-calling and any sort of derogatory comment directed towards others in order to insult or to wound

Comparison to Innuendo • Definition: an indirect intimation about a person or thing, especially of a disparaging or a derogatory nature. • An example "How about you come home with me, and I'll show off my collection of Giant Sized Man-Things." What am I talking about? Well, if I'm talking about what you think I'm talking about, that's innuendo. (I actually have a series of DC comics called "Man-Thing,” one of the issue are "Giant Sized"). • Innuendo- Suggestive of something Else • Euphemism& Dysphemism's- Directly refers to something Example: Graze on my lips, and if those hills be dry Stray lower, where the pleasant fountains lie. (Venus and Adonis by William Shakespeare)

Advantages and Disadvantages • Euphemisms • Advantage: may be used to avoid words considered rude, while still conveying their meaning • Disadvantage: • May effect the person later in life, life “ Pre Owned Cars” Just another word for another person’s car that they didn’t want or something may be wrong with it. Better known as just business.
