  4. What Counselors Do • There are three main areas that counselors focus on. These are: academic, career, and personal/social. • We help students make decisions about classes and post-high school options (like college, work, apprenticeships and more!) • We also help students set goals for themselves or work through tough times in life. • We also help students that might be struggling to do well in school.

  5. Success tips for High School. • Go to all of your classes, on time, every day. • Turn in all of your homework on time. • Be involved. • Know your resources. • Be aware of your grades and credits. • Student Vue/ Parent Vue

  6. Why does being successful in High School Matter? • Having a high school diploma means better job opportunities and maybe better pay. • It helps you learn the skills necessary to get through life. • It opens doors for the future. Teachers and counselors want you to graduate with as many options as possible.

  7. What are Credits? • Each yearlong class that you complete and pass= 1 credit • Each semester class that you complete and pass= .5 credit • Requirements in the state of Oregon. • Our school’s requirements.

  8. Questions • How many credits can you earn in a year? • Are there ways to earn more than the standard amount of credits? • If so, what are they? • How many credits does your class need to graduate?

  9. What are Transcripts? • The high school transcript is a legal record of the classes you have taken. • It also tracks how many credits you have earned and the grades you received. • Your high school transcript will be sent to all the colleges you apply to. • Employers may request a copy of your transcript as well.

  10. Sample Transcript- 9th Grade

  11. 12th Grade Sample Transcript #1

  12. 12th Grade Sample Transcript #2

  13. What do Employers and Colleges See When Looking at a Transcript? • Courses = what classes did you take? Were they required or advanced? What classes are you currently taking? • Credits = did you do well enough for the class to count, do you earn the credits to move on? • Dates = when did you go to school, how long did it take you? • GPA = grade point average, over all, how competent are you? • Grades = can you get the job done, are you responsible & organized? • Rank = where are you in relationship to your classmates, bottom 50%, top 10%?

  14. Other Graduation Requirements • OAKS Tests • Students that are Freshman this year must pass the Reading, Writing and Math tests to graduate. • Senior Exhibition • Remember Career Ed is taught in advisory, and is required for graduation!

  15. College Entrance Requirements • Class Requirements • Grade Requirements (what is a passing grade for college?) • Math • World Languages • Fine Arts • Selective Colleges- what are they looking for?

  16. What are your questions?

  17. Thank you!
