Introduction • Today I am going to tell you how apartheid started and ended, who helped stop apartheid, and a lot more……………….. • Did you know what apartheid means? • Apartheid means a rigid policy of segregation of the nonwhite population. • Did you know when it started? And end? • A. 1900 to 2000 b. 2004 to 2009 c. 1948 to 1990 • It started in 1948 to 1990.
My thesis • In south Africa, was like segregation. The white people had more power than black Africans.
How did they separate them between whites and blacks? • They separate the whites and blacks by putting signs or fences.
History • South Africa was colonized by the English and Dutch in the seventeenth century. • Independence from England, an uneasy power sharing between the two groups held sway until the 1940’s. • In 1948, race laws touched every aspect of social life.
Who helped stop it? • There was a man who was tired of this apartheid going on. • His name is Nelson Mandela. • Born on July 18, 1918. • Born in Transkei region of South Africa. • His father died when Mandela was 9 years old.
After he left Fort Hare University in 1941 • In 1944, He went to Johannesburg and start the African National Congress Youth League.( he soon was a leader) • Government saw him as a threat to their policy of apartheid. • In 1964, he was put in jail and that made him a less leader. (sentences to 27 years in prison). • “only free men can negotiate; prisoner cannot enter into contracts. Your freedom and mine cannot be separated.’’ (Nelson Mandela)
After prison…….. • Mandela got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. • He became the first president of south Africa from may 10, 1994 until 1999. • He was one of the greatest leaders of all time and respected around the world. • He wanted to free South Africa without violence.
But…….. • The government started killing and hurting protesters. • So, He started Umkhonto we Sizwe( spear of nation). • Mandela is a hero in South Africa and helped end apartheid. • Did you know that he helped racial equality begin in South Africa.
conclusion • In south Africa, it was like segregation. The white people had more power than black Africans, but nelson Mandela changed that. No more segregation and whites people don’t have more power than black Africans. • if Nelson Mandela didn’t speak up than today would not be today.
Causes and effects • It was over power. • They couldn’t leave the area. • They separate Blacks and whites • In south Africa, Africans had a little Area to live.
This is how much the whites took of the Africans. whites blacks
