Ranking • I give the Center for Student-Athlete Services four stars as an internship site. I really enjoyed my time here as an intern and the staff really made me feel welcome. I always felt like I was a part of the team when it came down to making decisions or eating lunch or anything. The camaraderie was really great between all of the staff members and there was never a dull moment. The reason I didn’t give it a full five stars is because there isn’t much of a chance that you will get hired on as a full-time worker after the internship. I was not offered a job because there really isn’t a lot of jobs available unless some of the current supervisors decide to leave.
Internship Objectives • To gain experience and knowledge of the daily operations of Academic Services. • Become familiar with student athlete eligibility requirements • Learn how to use SIMS(Student Information Management System) and SAMS(Student Athlete Management System) • Familiarize myself with the Learning Center and how it is used to help student athletes succeed in the classroom. • Student Advising that includes both eligibility and monitoring progress towards student degrees. I actually got to sit in on a guest coach meeting that went into detail of what is required of the student athletes to remain eligible and what the staff has to do to make that happen • Temporary office assistant for Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Athlete Development (John Thornton). I assisted John and Mona on two different occasions for six days a time while their secretary was out of the office. It was a very good experience in another part of the Athletic Department.
Daily Activities There really is not a typical day in the office. The only thing typical is when I get in, I check my work email, respond to anything that needs it, then Margaret usually comes in and puts me to work. • Here is a list of some of the things I do: • Create Spreadsheets, word documents, • Make Copies • Send Faxes • Deliver important documents across campus • Assist the other Academic Supervisors as needed • Fill in at the front desk for Mrs. Janice occasionally • Work in SIMS and SAMS for Margaret and Ingrid • Make sure employees complete online training • Assist Learning Specialists with finding and printing reviews and syllabi • Move furniture around as needed (includes hanging new pictures) • Put together gift bags for Guest Coaches
Project Description My project was to create a flyer that the Center for Student-Athlete Services could use to hand to recruits and guests in the Bright Complex to give a better understanding of the services offered. We listed the structure of CSAS, along with interesting facts, such as: 100 Subject Tutors, 40 Learning Assistants, 13 Private Tutor Rooms, laptops for checkout, etc. The project took several weeks to complete and caused many headaches, but I finally finished it up and it is now in use all over the building and around campus.
