Solve: Y + 12 = 312

Solve: Y + 12 = 312. Y = 300. Solve 3z = 612. Z = 206. Try this one! 5w – 13 = 263. W = 50. Solving two-step equations. Step 1 : draw in your balance line. Step 2 : use the addition or subtraction property of equality to get the term with a variable alone on one side of the equation.

  1. Solve: Y + 12 = 312 Y = 300

  2. Solve 3z = 612 Z = 206

  3. Try this one! 5w – 13 = 263 W = 50

  4. Solving two-step equations • Step 1: draw in your balance line. • Step 2: use the addition or subtraction property of equality to get the term with a variable alone on one side of the equation. • In other words, do the opposite of what your original equation has. For example, if the equation is 2x +2 = 10, you want to subtract 2 first FROM BOTH SIDES. • Step 3: use the multiplication or division property of equality to write an equivalent in which the variable has a coefficient of 1. • If we are still using our above equation (2x + 2 =10) and we have already subtract 2 from both sides, giving us 2x = 8, we can now do the opposite of what our equation asks. We will divide two from both sides and get the answer x = 4

  5. Practice! • Solve the following: • 3x – 30 = 660 • w + 15 = 30 5

  6. Let’s work the other way… • Write a variable equation for the following word problem and solve: • You are ordering tulip bulbs from a flower catalog. You have $14 to spend. 1 tulip bulb cost .75 cents and $3 shipping cost is added to your entire purchase. How many tulip bulbs can you buy? .75x + 3 = 14 X = 14.6

  7. Write a variable equation for the following word problem and solve: • Suppose you are helping to prepare a large meal. You can peel 2 carrots per minute. You need 60 peeled carrots. How long will it take you to finish if you have already peeled 18 carrots? 2t + 18 = 60 T = 21 minutes

  8. Homework! • Pages 84-85 #’s 1-35Odd, 59-72all
