NCSL Position on Common State Standards • State legislators support voluntary state standards initiatives so long as they: • Remain voluntary • State-led and State administered • Fed. gov’t doesn’t overstep its role • U.S. Dept. of Edu. doesn’t condition receipt of fed. $ on state participation in common state efforts SOURCE: www.ncsl.org/ncsl-in-dc/task-forces/policies-education.aspx
NCSL Position on Common State Standards • Causes for concern: • U.S. Dept. of Ed. Race to the Top funds included common standards a criterion for eligibility • $350 million in federal ARRA funds to develop the common assessments • The federal government has a history of co-opting successful state policy SOURCE: www.ncsl.org/ncsl-in-dc/task-forces/policies-education.aspx
