What does Surveillance mean? • The use of IT to monitor the actions of people. • Tracks or records employee’s performance • Supports claims for promotion • Ensures that employees follow the organizations internet policy appropriately
Stakeholders Involved • When talking about surveillance, the people that control the IT developments are the government, which in the US is the Department of Homeland Security. • Surveillance cameras have increased in combat terrorism. • The people who are affected by surveillance systems are the individuals who are being watched by the cameras. • Criminals lose the most from the installation of more cameras because it creates a high probability that they will be found if they commit a crime because they have accurate evidence.
Strand 1- Social and ethical significance • Areas of Social and Ethical Significance: Politics, Education, and Home and Leisure
Social Impact • People who are in charge of surveillance cameras must make sure they are watching the cameras and not getting off task. If they are the assigned supervisor, they must make sure they are doing what they are supposed to do to make sure all crimes are being monitored.
Ethical Impact • People who make watch thesurveillance videos must make sure they are making the right decisions when they are trying to prove if someone is guilty or innocent. If they accuse someone of stealing in a store, they need to make sure they know exactly who it is before they try to arrest that person, especially if that person is innocent.
Global Impact • The need for surveillance all over the world is becoming a necessity to limit the amount of crime in many countries. The government is willing to spend money on surveillance products to keep people safe and reduce the amount of crime going on in local communities and all over the world.
Strand 2- Specific Scenarios • Business and Employment/Politics and Government
Scenarios • CCTV cameras have been installed in Portsmouth UK. They are used to monitor the streets. There is a car driving around an empty parking lot, it could be a joy rider, or someone driving around in a deserted parking lot who might be a vandal. The question is now, is it necessary to call the police? • The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi required a comprehensive security system in the city due to the amount of people in the city. 53,000 foreign spectators expected to attend. 25,000 police forces and 8,000 troops. They were very serious about having a strong security system during the Olympics.
Strand 3- IT Systems • CCTV camera (Closed Circuit Television)
Surveillance Overview • Disadvantages: invades privacy of the public, and for criminals, they are being watched so they will get caught for their crimes. • Advantages: the government and police departments can catch criminals and have evidence against them. It also protects the public because violence is less likely to happen under surveillance.
