  3. James Madison “Father of the Constitution” He came to the Convention with the most ideas and contributed to the majority of its substance (especially the VA Plan) Took copious notes on the Convention, which is our best record of what happened there VA Delegate

  4. Roger Sherman Author of the Connecticut Compromise CT Delegate

  5. Gouverneur Morris Chair of the Committee on Style, he was responsible for the language of the Constitution (likely the Preamble) PA Delegate

Homework for Monday!  • There are three “hidden” mentions of slavery in the Constitution, which your book calls products of a “bundle of compromises” (p. 52-53) • Your assignment for Monday is to answer the following questions for each of the three mentions: • Where is this provision found? (Article and Section) • What did this provision require or do? • Did this provision last long? If not, what ended it? • Finally, give me your overall thoughts on these “compromises” with slavery. Do they undermine the Constitution or are they necessary evils? Why?
