God’s Promise to AbrahamGn 12:1-9 • Monotheism vs. Polytheism • The Call • Abram was born in the city of Ur • His father, Terah, moved family to Haran • God Calls Abram out of Haran (#6 on timeline) • This is the establishment of the first Monotheistic Religion and the beginning of direct Revelation

God’s Promise to Abraham • If Abram would put his faith in Him, God would promise to: • Make him into a great nation • Make his name great • Bless those who bless him, curse those who curse him, and to bless all the families of the earth by him • God told Abram to leave his people and go to Canaan • Abram (75 yrs. old) leaves Haran, with his wife Sarai, who was barren, and his nephew Lot

Abraham and Melchizedech Gn 14:18-25 • Lot is captured by a group of kings • Abram goes to his nephew’s rescue • Meets Melchizedech -- Offers Abraham 10% of his loot • Tithe: • A tenth part of one's annual income contributed to support the clergy or a church. The Mosaic law required the Israelites to pay a tithe for the support of worship. • Melchizedech – king and priest ofSalem – offers bread and wine to Abram (#7 on timeline)

  9. From Promise to Covenant • Circumcision (Gn 17:9-14) • Abraham and his descendents will carry in the flesh the sign that Abraham witnessed • It is a permanent reminder of the covenant with God

An Impossible Child Gn 18:1-12 • The Birth of Isaac- Son of the Promise • 3 strangers - says Sarah will have a son within the year • Since Sarah is barren and both Sarah (90) and Abraham (100) are too old to have children, Sarah laughs when she overhears what the stranger says. • Sarah does have a son who is named Isaac (laughter)

Sodom and Gomorrah (#8 on timeline)(Gn 19:23-29) • God reveals to Abraham • He is about to destroy the cities of Sodom (where Lot lives) and Gomorrah because of their wickedness • Abraham bargains with God • What if there are 50 righteous men? • None are found • Only Lot is found • God rescues Lot and his family • God would rather pardon than punish!!

  12. The Ultimate SacrificeGn 22:1-19 • Binding of Isaac (#9 on timeline) • This test is almost unimaginable: • “Take your son, your only son Isaac whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering.”

The Ultimate Sacrifice • Abraham obeys without hesitation • “God will provide himself, the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” • God responds to his faith by stopping Abraham • Final confirmation of promise #3! • Because Abraham was willing to give up his only son, all nations will be receive God’s blessing!

  14. The Ultimate Sacrifice • What the Story Says: • Faith and obedience cannot be separated! • “Faith without works is dead!” • Abraham not only believed so much but he ACTED accordingly

  18. Jacob and Esau Gn 25:19-34 • The Birth • Isaac’s wife Rebecca bears twins • Esau and Jacob (He deceives) • Esau was born first; he has the birthright • Inheritance • Special blessing • Head of family • Esau was a hunter - father’s favorite • Jacob was a farmer – Rebecca’s favorite

  19. Jacob and Esau • Jacob cheats Esau (Gn 27:1-45) • Jacob convinces Esau to sell his birthright for soup • Jacob Steals Blessing (#11 on timeline) • Esau looks for Jacob to kill him • God’s plan still goes forward despite Jacob’s actions

  20. Jacob and Esau • Jacob’s Ladder (Gn 28:10-19) • As Jacob makes his way to Haran (Rebecca’s family) he dreams about a ladder • In the dream God reaffirms the promise • Jacob names the place where this happens Bethel meaning “House of God”

Jacob in Haran • Jacob meets his cousin Rachel (Gn 29:1-20) • Falls in love with her • Laban (her father) makes Jacob work for 7 years for him for Rachel • Jacob is tricked into marrying Rachel’s older sister, Leah • Laban insists that Jacob work another 7 years for Rachel • After 20 years, Jacob leaves Haran very rich

Jacob in Haran • Gn 32:23-32 • Jacob wrestles with God (an angel and wins!) • The angel also damages his hip - reminder that God is always in control • Changes Jacob’s name to Israel (#12 on timeline) • Jacob and Esau then meet • Esau forgives his brother • Jacob’s 12 sons are founders of 12 tribes of Israel

Joseph and the Sons of JacobGn 37:1-36 • Joseph is sold into slavery (#13 on timeline) • Joseph = Jacob’ favorite son • Ability to interpret the meaning of dreams • Joseph tells his brothers that he has had a dream where they will bow down to him • Jacob then gives Joseph a “coat of many colors”. • Brothers are envious - plot to kill Joseph

Joseph and the Sons of Jacob • Joseph is sold into slavery • Reuben convinces the others to sell Joseph into slavery, thinking he’ll rescue Joseph later • Reuben is too late - Joseph is sold • The brothers tell their father (Israel) that Joseph has been killed by wild animals and they show him the coat covered in blood • Jacob mourns his son

Joseph in Egypt • Joseph a slave (Gn 39:1-23) • Joseph is sold to Potiphar • Puts Joseph in charge of his household • Potiphar’s wife falsely accuses Joseph of sexual harassment and • He is jailed • Joseph meets Pharaoh’s Baker and Butler in jail and interprets their dreams (Gn 40:1-22) • The Butler is released to work for Pharaoh again while the Baker is executed – exactly as predicted

  26. Joseph in Egypt • The Pharaoh Dreams (Gn 41:1-36) • The Pharaoh has 2 strange dreams • Joseph interprets the dreams to mean that there will be 7 years of good harvests followed by 7 years of famine • It happens!! • Joseph - It is God who has given the interpretation, not him

Joseph in Egypt • Joseph’s Brothers in Egypt (Gn 42-45) • Pharaoh appoints Joseph governor • Famine in Canaan • Jacob (Israel) sends 10 sons to Egypt to buy grain • They meet Joseph but do not recognize him • Joseph recognizes them • Tests his brothers • Reveals himself to them • Forgives them

Israelites in Egypt • Jacob’s Family Moves to Egypt (#14) • The Israelites settle in Goshen – a section of Egypt • Live in peace there for 400 years • Jacob gives his blessing to his son Judah (Gn 49:8-12) • Messiah will come from Judah’s line • Genesis ends with the death of Jacob and Joseph

Forgiveness • Genesis 50:20 “As for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good.” • This is the theme that introduces the concept of forgiveness • Forgiveness • To pardon a wrong • Esau does this with Jacob (Gn 33:1-4) • Joseph does this with his brothers as God wants to do with Mankind through his Covenant with Abraham • God is slowly teaching mankind the elements of love
