  1. 6.5 The Final Break

  2. On July 1, 1776, the 2nd Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to debate independence. On July 2, 12 of the colonies voted for independence. New York didn’t cast a vote. John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, about his excitement.

  3. Debate Over Slavery Congress revised Jefferson’s passage on slavery. Jefferson charged the king with carrying the colonists into slavery. Southerners feared it might lead to demands to free slaves, who provided labor on farms. Northerners worried that merchants who benefited from slave trade might be offended. The passage was removed.

  4. Independence Day! On July 4, the delegates approved a final version of the Declaration of Independence. By signing, they pledged support with “our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” Each signer was committing an act of treason against Britain, and could be hung if this new nation did not win its freedom. Treason - any attempt to overthrow the government or impair the well-being of a state to which one owes allegiance
