Debate Over Slavery Congress revised Jefferson’s passage on slavery. Jefferson charged the king with carrying the colonists into slavery. Southerners feared it might lead to demands to free slaves, who provided labor on farms. Northerners worried that merchants who benefited from slave trade might be offended. The passage was removed.
