DigiScan: a Tool to Find Made-to Measure Solutions for Improving Efficiencies in TransportationStef WeijersReinder PietersLeo PeetersDidier PietsEduard VoorenResearch Institute Logistics and AlliancesUniversity of Arnhem and Nijmegen
An efficiency move and a strategy move to bring business and universities together!... digiscan
The idea behind Digiscan • Found its origin with the Dutch Ministry of Transportation • Was initially used by commercial consultants in the logistics world
The idea behind Digiscan • It’s goal: • to aid distributors into streamlining their organisations • to reduce traffic • to help the environment to become ‘greener’ • to raise the awareness of Dutch entrepreneurs of the impact of transportation on the Dutch society
What makes Digiscan so unique? • Data have been gathered for the past 6 years by professional consultancy bureaus • They have ‘milked’ the top of the line • The market want-and-need to continue remained • Hence, the HAN stepped in.
What makes Digiscan so unique? • In the past 6 years lots of data have been gathered • A major update of the database is planned in December this year • There is a high success rate: C&A reported a few million euro savings in transport costs using it
Hoe does Digiscan operate? It may be used in different phases • Quick Scan ( results in 1 week) • Un-depth (shallow) Scan (1 month) • In-depth Scan (3 months) • The above with an implementation plan.
What savings can be obtained? • Driving efficiency improvements (fuel savings, improvement driving skills, monitoring fuel consumption • FTL improvements (trucks fully loaded, choice of alternative transport modi, fleet management, modal shifting)
What savings can be obtained? • Route planning improvements, such as using on-board computers, cooperation within the chain (3 or 4PL), loading time reductions, fewer stops • Improvements on a strategic level, such as reenigineering of logistics processes, order cycle reduction, outsourcing etc.
The structure of Digiscan… • Static data regarding the flow of goods, destinations, planning and metrics are all stored inside the database • Variable data are imported by the consultant, such as kind of transportation, transport distances, load sizes, number of stops, PL function in the chain)
Who operates Digiscan?… • Our students (during a 6-month assignment with the company in their 3d year of study • Our tutors accompanying the students during their research • The company coach, facilitating the research and for the go/ no go decisions
Why is this a ‘win-win’ situation? • The participating universities (5) have a way and means to teach upcoming professionals the use of business models • The participating companies (around 150 so far) are very happy with the outcome
Why is this a ‘win-win’ situation? • It’s a standard model, so it is duplicable • Data are constantly regenerated • It is innovative, both for universities and companies • It becomes a tool to improve existing networks • Students learn ‘how to do research’
What is the idea behind this evolvement? • Companies learn to think strategically • Students are better trained • Teaching staff (tutors) benefit from the cross-pollination • Universities and companies come closer and from networks
Traveling through Digiscan Landa short but clear explanation of the program itself
Step 1 • 25 ready made improvements to choose from • These are shown in a a bubble diagram • You may set your own priorities (in time, money, manpower etc) • ‘If/And’ or ‘If/Or’ analyses are possible by saving multiple scans
Step 2 • Add lots of data that are presented in a questionnaire… • …Or an Excel spreadsheet that is attached to the above. This can go as far as entering the amount of money spent or buying new truck tires in a year
Step 3 • Look at the bubbles diagram and choose those improvements that are highly efficient and strongly cost-reductive. • Other measures may be archived for later years
Step 4 • Print out a rudimentary implementation plan, generated by the program • Digiscan works best when measures are evaluated within a team of managers or is being used in a ‘project’-based environment
Step 5 • DO IT! • Let’s go see how it works in real-time!
