YOUTH EMPLOYMENT Funding by the General Fund (VIC Title 3, Chapter 21, Section 376 Act #6170) Prepares today’s Virgin Islanders for tomorrow’s careers Promotes training opportunities in conjunction with public and private agencies Develops service strategies that identify an employment goal Assesses customers academic level, skill level, and service needs Provides job-training services to youth ages 14-25
Partial Employment Technique (PET)/Entrepreneurial Enrichment Program • Designed to assist students with pre-employment training and improve basic academic skills. • Students are assisted in making the transition from school to work. • Ages 14 – 18. • Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) • Equips youth with a valuable work experience in their chosen career field. • Individuals work for 180 hours during the summer. • Ages 14 – 25. • Labor Investing For Tomorrow (LIFT) • Created to provide college level students with an on-the-job orientation in various business, technical, and professional fields. • Individuals work for 280 hours during the summer. • Ages 18 – 25. • Computer Literacy Training • Developed to assist participants with limited computer knowledge. • The program is broken down into three sections: General Computer Knowledge Microsoft Office Features Basic Electronic Communication • Ages 14 – 25. Apprenticeship and Training Program • Mandate of Apprenticeship and Training VIC, Title 24, Chapter 10, Sections 221 – 234 (March 1974 as amended) • Purpose • The purpose of this legislation was to focus on the economic needs of the Virgin Islands for skilled workmen and more specifically to offer the youth of the Territory the opportunity to learn skilled trades through an established and proven training system • Function • Promote the development of apprenticeship and other types of OJT’s • Provide staff assistance to the HRIC • Survey and studies of occupational and trade trends of industries Benefits • Increase Productivity • Reduces Labor Turn-over • Increases Worker Safety
