  3. Long Life = New Physics  lifetime of H (eg 2p) atom ~1 ns 50 MHz  50 MHz _  lifetime of neutron ~881 s n  p e- -interaction weak – short range (not so) new physics mass ~100 GeV 50 MHz  60 KHz

  4. Long Life = New Physics  lifetime of kaon ~ 12 ns -interaction weak – short range (not so) new physics 50 MHz  50 MHz 50 MHz  5 MHz / mass ~100 GeV Fermi scale 80 GeV beam  very rare decays of kaon lifetime > 121010 ns new interaction ? very weak – very short range brand new physics Π lepton ? lepton K 50 MHz  < 510-4 Hz  < 500 pa 80 GeV beam mass < 30 TeV?

  8. Select K in beam: KTag  Liverpool CAD 2012  “small project” for Liverpool – 9 months CAD to CERN

  9. “Well-found” lab  Liverpool engineering + workshop - indirect and estate costs (STFC + ERC + …… ) - wider benefit beyond and funded by research

  19. Liverpool HEP Meeting 18 December 2012 It works !

  20. Electronics • The TEL62 is a main board to digitize (using daughter boards), buffer data and to build trigger primitives. • It’s an evolution of the LHCbTELL1 board. • 13 boards in production: will be ready at the end of April. • Special crates ordered will arrive after Easter.

  21. IT: PCFarm & Network HP8219 PCFarm HP2910 • 7 x HP2910 already bought. • HP8212 ordered with 3 “8x10Gb/s” modules and 1 “24x1 Gb/s” module (middle of May). • Six 12 cores PCs foreseen for this year (to partially test the switches): • 2 already available. • 4 to be buy soon. • 10 Racks with cooling door ordered (end of April). HP2910 1 Gb/s copper 10 Gb/s fiber HP8212

  22. Applied Physics @ LHC  Cockcroft Institute + CERN accelerator physics Andy Wolski (CI) “chair” of “HL-LHC Board”

  23. CI Electrical Engineering @ CERN rf cavity R&D: cutting edge of precision and power -Lancaster University Graeme Burt(CI) chosen design for LHC

  24. Particle Physics & Engineering  more than one culture ? motivation ? discovery scientist passion and commitment one university suit does not fit all progress synthesis  excellence = peer review ! collaboration team-work engineer

  25. Particle Physics: the Global Club  PP is global - science driver  huge HE opportunity -UK academies (RS REngIoP CEng CPhys) - BIS  Membership is UK in Europe in - KE into/out of UK -KE into/out of NW England - local partnerships with parliamentary support CI, STFC DL, industry  global symbiosis for Liverpool University for 60 yr 1967 1906 1954 1959
