  1. Do Now 5/19 1) Complete Balanced and Unbalanced forces WS --- (If finished, work on landscape energy picture and make sure to turn it in). 2) Don’t forget to turn in Do Nows from last week.

  2. Newton’s 1st Law • An object at rest will remain at rest, and an object in motion at a constant velocity will continue in motion at that velocity unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced force.

  3. Ball on a String • How does this demonstrate N1stL? • What would happen if I slowed down my arm, hit another object, or just let the string go?

  4. Coin, Card, Flick Trick • What happened to the card? What about the coin? • Why did the card move but the coin didn’t? • What forces were acting on the coin? • Anyone heard of inertia?

  5. Do or Die Tablecloth Pull • Why did the tablecloth move but the objects didn’t? • What forces were acting on the objects? • What were to happen if I had a different kind of tablecloth? • Does mass have to do with N1stL?

  6. Target Practice! • Why is it so hard to hit the target? • Explain how inertia works in this demo!

  7. Do Now 5/20 • 1) Describe Newton’s 1st law in complete sentences. • 2) What do you think Newton’s 2nd law states? • Please grab a book and be seated quietly.

  8. Newton’s 2nd Law • Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. The greater the mass (of the object being accelerated) the greater the amount of force needed (to accelerate the object).

  9. Demonstration N2ndL • 1 Chair, 1 Student • Which trial has more mass? • Which trial did she complete faster and why?

  10. Newton’s 3rd Law? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNbjL8gr1iM • The above link explains Newton’s 2nd and 3rd law. • Please turn to page 647 and read to 653. • Answer questions 1 a, b, c , 2 a, b, c

  11. Do Now 5/21 • 1) How does the density of air affect air pressure? • 2) What are 3 ways heat is transferred?

  12. Recap of Newton’s 1st and 2nd Laws • Inertia – tendency of an object to resist a change in motion (Car braking suddenly). • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gzCeXDhUAA • Accel = Net Force/Mass • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwP4heWDhvw • http://science360.gov/obj/video/58e62534-e38d-430b-bfb1-c505e628a2d4/science-nfl-football-newtons-second-law-motion

  13. Newton’s 3rd Law • If one object exerts a force on another object, then the SECOND object exerts a force of equal strength in the opposite direction on the first.
