Individual Events in forensic meets. (IE). Original Oratory. You will deliver a speech on a topic of your own choosing that you have prepared and memorized. Must be delivered without notes or visual aids Can contain no more than 150 words quoted from other sources.

Original Oratory • You will deliver a speech on a topic of your own choosing that you have prepared and memorized. • Must be delivered without notes or visual aids • Can contain no more than 150 words quoted from other sources. • Generally these speeches are 8-10 minutes in length • May be Informative (the speaker tells the audience about something they may not already know) • Or Persuasive (the speaker intends to sway the audience to their opinions on a subject)
Extemporaneous Speaking • At the beginning of any round of extemp, competitors are usually given 3 questions relating to current events, and asked to choose one to prepare a speech on. The competitors have a preparation period, usually referred to as "prep time", during which they use periodicals they brought to the tournament to prepare the speech. • The speeches are usually 4 to 7 minutes in length. • They may be on any topic • They fall into to categories: • Foreign-Subjects concerning the current word outside of the US • Domestic- Subjects concerning the US.
Impromptu Speaking • You will be given a short idea, one word or phrase. You will then compose a speech on the prompt. • Prep time is usually short 15 seconds to 5 min. • Speeches are usually 4-7 minutes long.
Interpretation • In each of the events, you will be asked to perform a scene in which you play all of the parts, focusing on portraying them realistically • These are often referred to as the “Acting Events” • These are categorized into 3 categories: • Humorous-The subject matter is humorous in nature • Dramatic - The subject matter is serious in nature • DUO – Two contestants act out a single scene together without touching or looking at one another.
Oral Declamation • You will read someone else’s speech aloud in fine rhetorical form. • The material is not your own, it is originally published by someone else. • This is not an acting event. Do NOT imitate the original speaker! • You will carry the script of the speech in a black binder while it is being delivered. • Maximum time is 5 minutes.
