Allied forces began gaining territory back from Japan one island at a time • August 1942, Battle for Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) • Japan’s first defeat on land • By October 1944, Allied forces reached the Philippines at Leyte Island Island Hopping

Critical island for Allies to gain • Allied bomber planes could reach Japan from Iwo Jima • Island had 20,700 Japanese troops in tunnels and caves • Only 200 Japanese survived; 20,500 died • 6,000 U.S. Marines died in this battle Iwo Jima
