Who Is Providing You Information? Objective: Who is providing us information on the Internet? AND Why is it important that we find out?
Internet today: • Overwhelming • Hard to find stuff • Unorganized • TMI (too much information)!
Do you really know who is providing you information? • How often do we check to see who is providing information? • Do you just click on the first few links? • Can we trust those sources?
Example • Martin Luther King.org • Search in Googlehttp://www.google.com • In top 5 • Selecthttp://www.martinlutherking.org
Example • Martin Luther King web site • It’s a dot org (.org) • Top of the search list • Has a good description Can we trust it’s a reliable website?
Investigate further • Go to Easy Who Is to find out • http://www.easywhois.com • Type in the URL • Scroll to registration information • Notice Storm Front Organization • Provides organization, address, phone number and email address
Investigate further • Who is Storm Front Organization? • Google it! • Zog Storm Front Org. is a white nationalist organization • Can we trust them for MLK information?
Storm Front = hate group • Why would Storm Front host a MLK website? • Accurate information? • Bias in information?
Many other inaccurate websites • e.g., 1/4 of health information • It’s important to evaluate the source • Can’t trust everything on Internet
What are some things you can do to evaluate a source? • Go to the help screen on a search engine • Easy Who Is.com • Google your source
Why is it important to investigate who our source of information is?
