Understand SI Units • AMOUNT = kg or moles (g, mg, mmol) • VOLUME = m3 (cm3 = mL, L) • CONCENTRATION = AMOUNT / VOLUME • e.g. mg/mL, mg/L, kg/L, moles/L, μmoles/mL • NOTE: some combinations are IDENTICAL • 2.0 moles/L = 2.0 mmoles/mL = 2.0 μmoles/μL • 3.0 g/L = 3.0 mg/mL = 3.0 μg/μL • note: In a formula, units cancel out! STICK TO SI UNITS • DO NOT CONFUSE MOLES WITH MOLAR • MOLES is an amount • MOLAR (moles/L) is a concentration • Since many students confuse the two, stick to using “moles/litre”
