Timeline of Events • Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand goes to Sarajevo, Bosnia • Bosnia was Serb saw Austria as aggressors • JUNE 28, 1914 Archduke was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip • Austria gives Serbia and ULTIMATIUM to cease anti-Austrian aggression
Serbia does not comply with all of the demands • Austria declares war on Serbia on JULY 28, 1914 • Germany backs Austria • Russia backs Serbia, angers Austria • Austria declares war on Russia
France backs Russia (revenge for Franco-Prussian War) • Germany asks France to stay out of situation • France refuses • Germany declares war on France
